ABOUT THIS RUG
Eight square feet. Approximately four thousand things happening.
Meet Overachiever—a tiny antique Persian Hamadan that apparently saw its dimensions as a challenge.
The field is a beautifully aged brick-red/madder, dominated by an elongated geometric medallion packed with an almost unreasonable amount of detail. Tiny rosettes. Angular flowers. Diamonds. Boxes. Hooks. Branches. Little blue shapes we stopped trying to name.
Every inch got used.
Deep midnight-indigo spandrels anchor the corners, while an incredible ivory border filled with dark floral forms wraps around the entire composition. Smaller guard borders pile on even more red, blue, brown, ivory, faded pink and little flashes of gold.
The result is dense, graphic and gloriously old-school Persian.
No negative space.
Negative space was apparently for quitters.
Origin: Persia (Iran), attributed to the Hamadan weaving region
Age: Antique, likely circa 1930
Construction: Hand-knotted wool
Size: 2'0" × 2'8"
Colors: Aged madder red, midnight indigo, ivory, cobalt blue, faded pink, tobacco brown & muted gold
Design: Elongated geometric medallion with dense floral motifs, dark corner spandrels and contrasting ivory floral border
WHY WE LOVE IT
It's the density.
Most rugs this small simplify the drawing.
This one doubled down.
The field is absolutely loaded with tiny motifs, but somehow the big medallion keeps everything together. Your eye moves from the little cobalt accents to the ivory flowers, back through the dark indigo corners, and eventually lands on that fantastic high-contrast border.
Then you notice something else.
And something else.
And something else.
The colors are especially good because they've had decades to stop shouting and start getting interesting. Brick red has softened. Ivory has warmed. Blue ranges from midnight to startling little flashes of cobalt. Pink appears exactly where you don't expect it.
Nothing is perfectly centered.
Nothing repeats quite correctly.
Nobody fixed it. Lucky us.
CONDITION
Overachiever shows the honest evidence of age that gives an antique village rug its character.
There is visible pile variation and age-related wear throughout, along with irregularity at the ends and fringe. The upper end shows more obvious fringe loss and wear, while the body retains excellent visual presence and strong color.
The wool still has depth. The drawing remains wonderfully legible. And those little flashes of blue and ivory still jump against the red field.
It's not pretending to be 100 years old.
It's been practicing.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the condition description.
STYLING NOTES
At 2'0" × 2'8", Overachiever requires almost no commitment.
Kitchen sink.
Beside the bed.
Powder room.
Entry.
Under a little side table.
In front of a console.
On top of a much larger neutral rug.
Or put it somewhere completely unnecessary simply because the floor looked lonely.
That's the advantage of antique rugs this size.
You don't design a room around them. You sneak them into one.
And suddenly the room is better.
FINAL WORD
It's two feet wide.
Less than three feet long.
And somehow contains more pattern, color, history and personality than rugs approximately twelve times its size.
Classic overachiever behavior.
#1071 — Overachiever.
Small footprint.
Absolutely refuses to act like it.
