Small Antique Rugs: Where to Use Them and How to Buy One Online
Share
Small rugs get overlooked. They should not. A small antique rug is the easiest, least risky way to bring real age, color and handwork into a home, and they work in more places than you think.
What counts as a small rug?
Generally anything up to about 3 by 5 feet. In the antique world you will often see sizes like 2' x 3', 2'5" x 4'3" or 3' x 5'. Because these rugs were handmade, the sizes are rarely perfectly standard. Always check the exact measurements in the listing.
Where to use a small antique rug
- Entryways. The first thing anyone steps on. Old wool handles dirt and traffic better than most new rugs.
- In front of the kitchen sink or stove. Way better looking than a foam mat, and easy to shake out.
- Bathrooms. Away from direct splashing, a small vintage rug instantly warms up a lot of tile.
- Bedside. Your feet land on something soft and beautiful every morning.
- Layered. Put a small antique rug on top of a larger neutral rug, at an angle, for texture and color.
- On the wall or a table. The best small rugs are art. Treat them that way.
How to buy one online with confidence
- Check the exact size. Tape it out on the floor. Small rugs look bigger in close-up photos.
- Look at the close-ups. Softened, low pile from age is normal and lovely. Holes, moth damage or brittle areas are not. A good seller shows you both sides of the story.
- Look at the back. On a hand-knotted rug, the design shows clearly on the back, with small irregularities that machines do not make.
- Expect color variation. Gentle shifts in color across the rug, called abrash, come from hand-dyed wool. They are a feature, not a flaw.
- Ask about age. A good listing gives an approximate date range. Treat exact years with some suspicion; honest sellers give a range.
Caring for a small antique rug
- Use a thin non-slip pad, especially on hard floors.
- Shake it out or vacuum gently, without the beater bar.
- Rotate it now and then if it sits in the sun.
- Blot spills right away with cold water. Never scrub.
